The Fraser Collection of geological specimens
Dr Fraser, president of the Dudley and Midlands Geological and Scientific Society, and a medical practitioner in Wolverhampton, bequeathed his collection of geological specimens to Wolverhampton in 1911. Dudley Museum houses other collections from members of the society. Wolverhampton's collection includes over 5,000 specimens and is almost entirely composed of British fossils, representing the main groups through most stages of geological history. Many specimens come from localities which no longer exist.
Access:
The collection is in store at Wolverhampton Art Gallery. It can be viewed by appointment but, with no natural scientist on staff, it is not possible to find specific items or give expert advice. The collection is documented manually and the records will shortly be transferred onto the collections database.
Key Issues:
The biggest problem the collection currently faces is lack of expertise to identify problems and facilitate access. The service is working with other specialist curators in the region to increase the information about the collection available for researchers, and to develop the use of the collection alongside other displays.
